On-air old fashioned light5 WAYS TO MAXIMIZE YOUR VIRTUAL PRESENTATION

RESEARCH AND INSIGHTS FROM THE NOTRE DAME FANNING CENTER FOR BUSINESS COMMUNICATION

When it comes to making a virtual presentation, all the basics of effective presentations still apply. Make sure to put some extra thought into how you are engaging your remote audience. Here are some tips from the Fanning Center for Business Communication at Mendoza College of Business.

MAKE (VIRTUAL) EYE CONTACT AND SPEAK TO AN AUDIENCE OF ONE

Look directly into the camera lens and speak as if just one person is watching your presentation. Don’t fall into staring at the screen.

USE SECOND PERSON PRONOUNS

Say “I know you’re concerned about this,” or “I’ve thought about what’s most important to you, and. ...” This helps the audience feel as if you’re speaking directly (and only) to them, which can improve their attentiveness.

TAPE PICTURES BEHIND YOUR COMPUTER SCREEN Set up a scenario that mimics talking to actual people (if you can’t see faces on your screen). For example, tape three photos on the wall behind your computer to help you avoid always looking down at your notes. It also tricks your brain into thinking that people are there in the room and encourages you to be more conversational.

CREATE CONTRAST

Your audience will quickly get bored with just a talking head. Include well-designed visuals as an extension of you. Switch back and forth between you, your voice and your slides to help keep your audience engaged.

BE MINDFUL OF YOUR NONVERBALS Practice your movements because simple ones can appear bigger on screen. Try to avoid distracting movements like scratching your chin or pushing your hair back.
