In Memoriam

Gene Martell (BS Commerce ’56) passed away on April 19, 2016. Martell was a lineman on the Frank Leahy and Terry Brennan teams of 1953-1955, a fantastic man and team leader.

Mike Walsh (BS Commerce ’56) passed away April 5, 2016, following a long battle with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). Following his discharge from the U.S. Army, Walsh attended the University of Notre Dame. After a 34-year career in the investment brokerage industry in Iowa, Walsh retired to Surprise, Arizona. He is survived by his wife, Kay, their six children, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his siblings.

Michael Joseph Hogan (BS Commerce ’56) passed away July 14, 2016, at McAllen Medical in McAllen, Texas. Following graduation from Notre Dame, Hogan was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. After serving on active duty, he served in the Army’s Special Forces as a reservist. He retired in 1984 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Hogan was admitted to the American Bar Association and qualified to practice law in the states of Colorado, Kansas and Missouri. He is survived by his wife Mary, children, grandchildren and siblings.

Carlos A. Chambonnet (BS Commerce ’56) passed away July 20, 2016. While at Notre Dame, he participated in the La Raza and the Propeller clubs. In 1974, he founded his own insurance brokerage firm. Chambonnet served as Panama’s representative before the European Office of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, attending more than 15 international meetings. He was a columnist in the op-ed section of the daily La Prensa of Panama. Chambonnet was an active member of several organizations including the Panamanian Institute of Hispanic Culture, the Union Club of Panama, the Panamanian—as well as the American—Philatelic and Numismatic Society, the Americas Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Boy Scouts, the Lions International Stamp Club, Toastmasters Club of Panama, Golf Club of Panama and Geneva Tennis Club. He is survived by his wife and siblings.
